General Bradley

General Omar Bradley is most widely known as the US 1st Army Commander during the invasion of Normandy in June 1944. During that invasion, Bradley commanded from his flagship, the USS Augusta, as his troops landed on Utah and Omaha beaches.

After the landings at Normandy, he was named the Commander of the US Army in the field by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Allied Commander. He later commanded both the 1st and 12th army groups, which became an immense force of over 900,000 men.

It was the largest group of American soldiers ever to serve under a single field commander. Together with General Montgomery, Bradley effectively outmaneuvered the German army in Northern France, inflicting upon them a crushing defeat at the Falaise Gap. Bradley is one of only a handful of five star Generals in American history.
